Subtlety Rogue

TBC Classic PVP Guide

Overview

Subtlety Rogue is the premier burst DPS and CC class in TBC PVP. No other class can match the Rogue's ability to control when fights happen — stealth gives you the power to choose every engagement. Sap, Cheap Shot, Kidney Shot, Blind, and Gouge give you the deepest CC kit of any DPS class. When combined with Mage or Priest CC, Rogue creates kill windows that are nearly impossible to survive. The skill ceiling is extremely high — Rogue rewards precise timing and cooldown tracking more than any other class.

Faction Racials

horde

Undead — Will of the Forsaken

WotF breaks Fear. Rogue already has Cloak of Shadows for magic, but WotF gives a second Fear break on a separate cooldown. Extremely strong against Warlock and Priest teams. Best Horde Rogue race.

horde

Orc — Hardiness

15% stun resistance occasionally resists an enemy stun, giving you a free GCD. Blood Fury adds burst. Second best Horde option.

alliance

Human — Perception

Perception lets you detect enemy Rogues and Druids in stealth. In Rogue vs Rogue, whoever finds the other first wins. Perception wins Rogue mirrors. Best Alliance Rogue race by far.

alliance

Gnome — Escape Artist

Escape Artist breaks roots and snares. Useful for staying on targets through Frost Nova and Entangling Roots. Good but Perception is better for Rogue.

Arena Strategy

Rogue Fundamentals

You control when fights happen. Stealth is your most powerful ability — never leave it unnecessarily. Every fight starts on YOUR terms with a Sap opener. Track enemy trinket cooldowns — once the healer uses trinket, your next full CC chain is a guaranteed kill window.

The Opener

Standard opener: Sap the healer → Cheap Shot the kill target → build combo points → Kidney Shot. During KS, your partner unloads damage. If the healer trinkets Sap, Blind immediately. If they trinket Blind, Gouge. You always have one more CC than they have trinkets.

Vanish and Reset

Vanish is not just defensive — it is your reset button. After a failed kill attempt, Vanish to re-stealth. Wait for Sap DR to reset (18 seconds), then re-open. This reset ability is what makes Rogue unique. Never waste Vanish when you could use Evasion or Cloak instead.

Preparation doubles all your cooldowns — double Vanish, double Sprint, double Evasion, double Cloak. This is an enormous amount of resources. Use Preparation mid-game when your first set of cooldowns is exhausted.

Kick and Gouge

Kick locks out a spell school for 5 seconds. Save it for critical casts — healer heals during your kill attempt, or enemy Mage casting Polymorph. Do NOT Kick random damage spells. Gouge is a 4-second incapacitate that you can use to interrupt casts when Kick is on cooldown. Together, Kick + Gouge means you can interrupt two consecutive casts.

Matchups

vs Arms Warrior

Medium (5/10)

Warriors are tanky with Berserker Rage breaking Gouge. Evasion is strong but they can Overpower through it. Disarm is annoying. Kite with Sprint when Recklessness is up. Blind the Warrior during his cooldowns.

  • Berserker Rage breaks Gouge
  • Overpower beats Evasion
  • Kite during Recklessness with Sprint
  • Blind during cooldowns
  • Disarm is annoying — Cloak of Shadows

vs Restoration Druid

Medium (6/10)

Druids shift your Cheap Shot stun with Bear Form and have Thorns that break Gouge. Faerie Fire prevents re-stealth. Hard to control. Open on the Druid's partner, not the Druid — force them to heal.

  • Thorns break Gouge
  • Druids shift stuns in Bear
  • Faerie Fire prevents re-stealth
  • Open on Druid's partner
  • Force Druid to heal

vs SL/SL Warlock

Medium (6/10)

Soul Link tanks your burst. DoTs prevent re-stealth. Cloak of Shadows is essential to clear DoTs for Vanish. Kill the Warlock's partner, not the Warlock. Fear is your biggest threat — Cloak it or trinket it.

  • Soul Link tanks burst
  • Cloak DoTs for Vanish
  • Kill partner, not Warlock
  • Cloak or trinket Fear
  • DoTs prevent re-stealth

vs Frost Mage

Medium (5/10)

  • Shadowstep after Blink
  • Cloak burst
  • Kick Polymorph
  • Skill matchup

vs Discipline Priest

Easy (3/10)

Priests are squishy and have no escape. Stun lock into kill. Kick Mana Burn and heals. Blind is especially strong vs Priest — no way to break it without trinket. Easy kill target.

  • Priests are squishy
  • Stun lock kills
  • Kick Mana Burn
  • Blind has no counter
  • Easy target

vs Beast Mastery Hunter

Medium (4/10)

Flare reveals your stealth — approach from odd angles. The Beast Within makes the Hunter immune to CC during Bestial Wrath. Wait it out or Evasion through it. Scatter/Trap is their CC on you.

  • Flare reveals stealth
  • Wait out Bestial Wrath
  • Evasion through BW
  • Approach from odd angles
  • Scatter/Trap is their CC

vs Holy Paladin

Medium (4/10)

Paladins are tanky but immobile. Stun lock and burst. Wait out Bubble — it lasts 12 seconds. After Bubble, the Paladin has nothing. Wound Poison reduces healing.

  • Stun lock and burst
  • Wait out Bubble
  • After Bubble they're defenseless
  • Wound Poison reduces healing
  • Immobile — easy to stick to

Battleground Strategy

Battleground Role

You are the node assassin and flag defender. Stealth to enemy nodes, Sap the defender, cap the flag. In WSG, you defend the flag room or chase enemy flag carriers. Your 1v1 power makes you the best solo objective player in BGs.

Sap cap is your signature BG move. Stealth to an enemy-held node in AB, Sap the defender, start capping. If a second defender comes, Blind them. You can cap a node against 1-2 defenders alone.

In team fights, focus enemy healers. Kidney Shot + burst on a healer during a team fight removes their healing for the duration — your team wins the fight.
